sunday scribblings: aging

#156 -- Aging

Well, we're all as old as we have ever been, and we're all at different stages of considering the aging process. What thoughts do you have on the subject?

I have a strong opinion on aging, particularly in reference to women. First let me just say, I realize that I am only 21 and have yet to deal with those "horrid" things called wrinkles and crow's feet, slowing metabolism, and all the other things that come with age.

I think aging is beautiful. Yup, I said it. BEAUTIFUL. I think the most beautiful people, both men and women, are those who have accepted their age and all physical changes that come with it and have made the most of it. I can't stand people who freak out when they see a wrinkle and instantly make an appointment for a face lift or botox. Gag me please! I think those wrinkles and scars are proof of life well-lived. They signify stories and experiences, age and wisdom. Just as people constantly tell younger generations to grow up, I say the same to adults who try to excessively artificially preserve themselves. Embrace aging. Do everything you can to keep yourself in tip-top shape without going through constant ridiculous procedures. Case in point: Joan Rivers. Not only do I find her incredibly irritating, but she's a walking advertisement for plastic surgery.

Let me just end by saying everyone, no matter what stage of life you art at, should try to always look their best. Take care of your body: eat well, exercise, laugh, have good relationships with people. But please don't try to look like you are 20 years younger than you are. You are beautiful, or handsome, just the way you are and you don't need botox, face lifts, or plastic surgery. Embrace your beauty, I beg of you!!!

May I also end with this last tid-bit: don't ever grow up. By this I mean, yes be mature but also allow that spunky, child-like fun to come out and come out often! That part of you that just likes to have fun, that appreciates the simple things like playing tag outside or swinging on swings. The part that laughs just so others will laugh too. The part that forgives easily. That part that teases for fun not to cut down. Go read your favorite childhood book or watch your favorite childhood movie. Don't take life so seriously-that's boring for you and it's boring for people around you. I will forever foster that childish part of me because it makes me happy and I'd like to think it makes others happy too.

"He carried his childhood like a hurt warm bird held to his middle-aged breast." -Herbert Gold

You are awfully smart for 21! I have to say, when I go back and read journals from when I was 21, I think "Wow! I knew stuff!"

I couldn't agree with you more completely. Just don't forget this when you're "old". Too many people do.....
